And the season continues...
The Williston Coyotes closed out their regular season on Friday, May 17 with a doubleheader on the road against the Mandan Braves. With their WDA playoff fate hanging in the balance, the Coyotes took one of two games to ensure they will have an opportunity to play in at least one more game this year.
In the first matchup of the afternoon, Williston was no match for Mandan as the Braves won easily, 12-2. A pair of five-run innings from Mandan in the second and third all but sealed the Coyotes fate. Williston collected seven hits in the game, and starting pitcher Alexis Renner suffered the loss.
However, the Coyotes responded in a big way, taking the second game against Mandan, 17-7. Williston posted eight runs in the second inning, six more runs in the third, and three runs in the fourth to close out the Braves in five innings.
All told, the Coyotes accounted for 20 hits in the game. Williston leadoff hitter Bridget Carvey had a monster game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run batted in and three runs scored. Meanwhile, Sierra Main went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with three RBIs, and Madison Heupel also made her presence felt at the bottom of the order with a 3-for-4 outing that included a run batted in and three runs scored. Caeleigh Goodman picked up the win for Williston, pitching all five innings and allowing five earned runs while striking out four and walking two.
Ending the regular season with a record of 9-17, the Coyotes next game will be a WDA play-in game against Watford City. The contest will take place on Monday, May 20 at the Wester Star Softball Complex, in Williston. Start time for the ballgame is slated for 5:30 p.m.
