Norbert Anton Kihle, 93, of Crosby ND formerly of Columbus, passed away October 11, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Crosby with family by his side. Funeral Service will be held Monday, October 15, 2018 at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus at 11:00 a.m. with Lay Pastor Danny Hysjulien officiating. Burial with Military honors will follow at Pleasant Prairie Cemetery in rural Columbus. Family services will be held at 7:00 p.m. October 14, 2018 at Faith Lutheran Church. Norbert was born June 8, 1925 to Nelsie and Andrew Kihle on a farm Northwest of Columbus. He grew up on a farm with his 3 brothers and 1 sister and graduated from Columbus High School in 1943.
Norbert was united in marriage on November 14, 1948 to Ardath Malnaa at First Lutheran Church in Crosby ND. From that union 2 children were born, Margo Faber and Scott Kihle. Norbert and Ardie made their home in Columbus, ND where in 1963 they purchased the Golden Rule Store and Locker. They operated this business until purchasing the Jack and Jill Store in 1967. After 21 years in the grocery business they retired in 1984 and started spending time between their winter home in Mesa and their cabin at White Bear Lake where they enjoyed spending time with their family and friends.
They moved to Minot in 2013. After Ardie’s death, Norbert continued to live in Minot until October 2018 when he moved to Crosby. Norbert entered the Navy in 1944 and was commissioned to the USS Darke during WWII. He served in the South Pacific including Iwo Jima until his discharge in 1946. He was very active in his community. He served as Police Chief, Fire Chief, Councilman and Mayor. For over 50 years he was a member of the American Legion where he served in the color guard. He was a 30-year member of the Burke County Water Board and was involved in the construction of Smishek Lake, Short Creek Dam and Northgate Dam. He also was a member of the Sportsman Club and founding member of Faith Lutheran Church. Norbert enjoyed playing pool and had many championships under his belt. He also enjoyed playing pinochle and cribbage with friends and family. He spent numerous hours constructing and remodeling. At the age of 84 he built his own garage. Norbert is survived by his daughter; Margo Faber (Gary) Austin MN, son; Scott Kihle (Karen) Columbus, grandchildren; Ryan Faber (Megan), Kristin Faber, Matthew Kihle (Megan), Joshua Kihle (friend Taryn Schmit) and Kayleen Kihle, great grandchildren; Grant and Lauren Faber, Audrey and Trista Kihle, brother; Donald Kihle, sister; Shirley Roloff, sisters-in-law; Adeline Kihle, Lou Kihle and Delores Sitter and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Duane and Lloyd Kihle, brothers-in-law; Marlin, Howard, and Gary Malnaa, J. Floyd Pederson, Leo Sitter and Earl Roness, sisters-in-laws; Olga Roness, Myrtle Kihle, Emmy Malnaa, and Alma Malnaa.
