Dorothy was born on January 29, 1916 during a blizzard in Williams County, North Dakota, a daughter of Chris and Minnie (Arneson) Nelson. She was raised and educated in the Williston, North Dakota area and graduated from Williston High School in the early 30's. Following her high school education Dorothy attended a dance at Stipek with one of her sisters and they decided to move to Glendive. While in Glendive Dorothy worked at the Northern Pacific Railway until World War II began. At that time Dorothy and her sisters went to Seattle to assist in the war efforts and they worked as secretaries for the same company. At the conclusion of the war, Dorothy returned to Glendive and it wasn't long after that Dorothy met her future husband, Malcolm Graves. Dorothy and Malcolm were united in marriage on January 19, 1946 and to this union one son, Mikel, was born.
For many years Dorothy and Malcolm managed a Conoco gas station and later started their own laundromat in 1951. They owned and operated the laundromat into the early 80's and Dorothy also was the secretary for the District Sanitarian's Office for a few years as well before retiring.
Dorothy loved playing bridge, gambling on the machines, doing crossword puzzles and bowling. She was also an excellent cook. Dorothy was a member of the local Eastern Star chapter for many years as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Minnie; her husband, Malcolm; brothers, Bill, Kenneth, and Donald; and sisters, Jessie, Beatrice, and Edith.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Mike of Glendive; and numerous nieces and nephews.
