A man shot himself while trying to break into a home in Watford City early Monday morning, police say.
The Watford City Police Department reported Monday, April 29, that a man who was accused of trying to force his way into a home in the 400 block of Fourth Street NW was flown to the hospital to be treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His condition was not available Monday afternoon.
Officers responded to a report of an armed man trying to break into a home in the 400 block of Fourth Street NW around 12:14 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the department. A caller to 911 reported that the person trying to break into the home had fired several shots into the residence.
When police arrived, they found a man who had apparently shot himself. the news release said. The man was taken by air ambulance for treatment.
Police have not released any identifying details about the man, including his age or name. The Watford City Police Department, the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating.
No one else was hurt in the incident, and police said they didn’t believe there was any further danger to the public. The case will be reviewed by the McKenzie County State’s Attorney’s Office for possible charges once the investigation is finished, police said.
