The Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office investigated two fatalities on Wednesday morning.
The first happened around 7:44 p.m., when Williams County Sheriff’s deputies were pursuing a 29-year-old man to serve him with civil court papers, according to a news release from the Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, Troy Marcus, ignored the deputies’ attempts to stop him and pulled into a ditch alongside State Highway 1804 about 1/2 mile over the Mountrail County border, the sheriff’s office wrote in the news release. Marcus was found dead in the car from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The second incident happened around 9:12 a.m., when a pickup truck was hit by a westbound train about five miles west of Stanley. Myron Aune, 60, of Mandan, waited for an eastbound train to clear a crossing, but was struck by the other train when he tried to cross the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
