Four people from Louisiana are being held on $3,000 bond after police say they stole copper wire in McKenzie County.
Jeromy Beard, 42, of Downsville, Louisiana, Lloyd McLain, 53, of Monroe, Louisiana, Truly McClain, 49, of West Monroe, Louisiana, and Anthony Freeman, 26, of West Monroe, Louisiana, were all charged Wednesday with class C felony theft. The four were stopped by McKenzie County Sheriff’s deputies Monday afternoon after a caller told police he’d seen the four stealing copper wire from a trailer on his property, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Northwest District Court Wednesday.
Police said a search of the pickup truck the four were riding in turned up cut copper wire worth more than $1,000, as well as copper wire cutters in the bed of the truck, court records indicate. The witness who reported the theft said he’d seen the four on his property in Watford City and followed them while calling police.
During an interview with police on the scene, Freeman told an officer that Lloyd McClain and Beard had stolen the copper wire, charging documents state.
All four are scheduled to have preliminary hearings on the theft charge on Jan. 3.
