bras for a cause

This baseball-themed bra was auctioned off during a previous Bras for a Cause event. Money raised from the annual event is used to help local individuals battling cancer.

A local charity organization is showing just how versatile bras can be when it comes to providing support.

Bras for a Cause is a local non-profit group started in 2012 as a way to provide support, advice and assistance for residents of Williams County who are battling cancer. One of the many ways it contributes to the cause is by holding fundraisers, and right now Bras for a Cause is ramping up for one of its most popular events, the annual Bra Auction, taking place on Nov 3.

Individuals and business from around the area decorate bras in a variety of themes, with some covered in mirrors and disco balls, decked out in camouflage, or celebrating America's favorite pastime, baseball. The bras are then auctioned off at the event, helping raise money for those affected by cancer. Cheryl Donoven, Bras for a Cause president, says the annual event has been one of their most successful fundraisers, something she said is due to the charitable spirit of those who donate.

"We live in the most giving community that I know of," she said. "Everybody knows somebody that's been affected by cancer, and everybody is always so willing to give."

The event kicks off at 4 p.m. at the New Armory in Williston with a video sharing the stories of some of the survivors the organization has assisted. Along with the ever-popular bra auction, Donoven said there will be a live auction featuring items such as firearms and vacations, and a silent auction with some smaller items such as Scentsy pots and Harley Davidson gear. Food and entertainment will also be on hand, with a DJ providing music after the auctions are concluded.

In the five years that Bras for a Cause has been operating, Donoven says they have raised nearly $500,000, with all of that money staying locally to provide support for those in need.

"None of this money leaves," she said. "It doesn't go to research, it goes to people battling cancer for whatever they need the money for. Whether it's to pay their deductible, to pay for their medication, to pay their travel expenses, to pay their mortgage. Just something to alleviate a little bit of stress that they have worrying about money."
