WILLISTON — In a slumping oil market, many companies have scaled back spending, but have not spared the expense for safety. This explains how a local company, Basin Safety Consulting, has evolved in a changing market and now celebrates its expansion.
With the bustle of a small army of friends and family he employs, Basin Safety Consulting President and CEO, Jon Greiner prepared last-minute details in anticipation for community members to arrive for the grand opening ribbon cutting.
With its conception in 2012, Basin Safety Consulting started solely by word of mouth and quickly picked up momentum from there. Even as the “new kid on the block,” the company has stayed relevant by capitalizing on technological advances and diversifying to meet demands for multiple industries.
“Others don’t use cloud-based information,” Greiner said. “We can report faster and share files instantly. We custom-build reports for each client that is only accessible by them.”
When oil prices began sinking, the effects rippled throughout the region causing layoffs and tightened pocketbooks. Identifying early on that if his company was to brave the storm, Greiner would need to meet needs of more industries.
“We’re the only local company that provides the services we do,” Greiner said. “We do agriculture, oilfield, construction, and rail safety. We also assist in the authorship of safety manuals, procedures, and compliance programs.”
Greiner said oil companies are hesitant to spend money but still find means to ensure their workers are safe. “Business hasn’t slowed but it has scaled back,” Greiner said. “We haven’t had less customers but the amount of people we have trained in our training department has been less.”
Kelly Marcotte cradled her 4-month-old baby, Jakob, as he looked around in awe of the new faces as guests began to arrive. Kelly’s husband, Ben Marcotte, is the Safety Consulting and Training Manager at Basin Safety.
“Ben has known Jon for probably 11 or 12 years now,” Kelly said. “Right after we got engaged Jon talked him into coming to work for him.
“Because of Basin, we’re secure financially, even in a slow market,” Kelly said as she bounced Jakob from getting fussy. “My husband and I didn’t know when we could start a family. Our lives are completely different because of it.”
