Former Williston High School and University of Mary baseball player Andy Leer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 25th round of last month’s Major League Baseball draft.
Recently, he visited with the Herald over the telephone in a feature format called Tuesday Conversation.
Each Tuesday, an athlete or coach from the area will be highlighted in this feature. Q. How did you get interested in baseball?
A. I’ve always played it my whole life. My brother played it and then I started to play it and got good at it.
Q. What is your favorite memory?
A. Playing in the 15-year-old Babe Ruth World Series in Williston was awesome.
Q. What are some of your lowlights?
A. I’m sure there are a ton of games that you would like to forget. My teammates and coaches have been good. There aren’t any lowlights.
Q. What has been the secret to your success?
A. Hard work. I’ve been blessed with the ability to play, but I wouldn’t get anywhere without hard work.
Q. What are some of your other interests?
A. Hunting and fishing. A couple of my buddies and I want to start a hunting TV show.
Q. Which sports teams do you follow?
A. Obviously, the Twins. College basketball - I’m a big Duke fan. And anything else that is on.
Q. Who inspires you to work as hard as you do?
A. It comes from my family and coaches. Back home everybody wants what is best for you.
Q. What advice do you have for others who have interest in the sport?
A. Work hard. There are a lot of people in North Dakota who think you have to go somewheres to be seen.
