Fourteen teams, seven in each district, will be winnowed down to eight for next week’s regional tournament to fight for a shot at the state title.
A strong local rivalry gets renewed on Thursday in the District 16 tournament at Tioga. Trenton will take on the hosting Pirates a week after the two teams played in Trenton.
Tioga won that game 47-37 after pulling ahead in the fourth quarter.
Tioga will be looking to tighten up their game after having some problems in Trenton. “We definitely have to come out with more enthusiasm and more energy...,” said Tioga coach Brodie Odegaard. “We’re going to have to have three good days of basketball. It’s a very balanced district tournament and we’re just going to have to come and compete.”
With a roster that only goes seven deep, Trenton will have to stay out of foul trouble and be prepared for the possibility of three games in three days.
“I expect our team is going to play tough,” said Trenton coach Walter Eldridge. “We know what we’re capable of now and we know what they (Tioga) are going to do. We’re definitely going to come out and play hard.”
Each tournament is essentially double-elimination in the search for regional spots, with the two semifinal winners advancing automatically but still playing a championship game. Two regional qualifying games in each district on Saturday will decide the final two spots.
