Stanley pulls off the upset of Harvey

The Stanley Blue Jays opened the 2009 Class B state tournament Thursday with a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Harvey at the Minot State University Dome.

Sophomore Shaunessy Dauwalder had 16 kills and three aces, while Rachel Mehus finished with 10 kills.

Harvey came into Thursday's match with a 37-0 record.

In addition to Dauwalder and Mehus, Stanley also got eight kills from Jasmin Pappa and six each from Bailey Hornberger and Brooke Meyer. The Lady Blue Jays also got 33 assists from ReeAnn Mehus. Maggie Lorenz finished with 14 kills, while Amy Buxa and Sheyenne Schneider each had six.

Stanley moves on to play Hazen this evening in a state semifinal match, while Harvey moves on to play Park-Fordville-Lankin in the consolation round.

In other first round action Thursday, Linton-Hazelton-Moffitt-Braddock topped Flasher, 3-0; Kenmare defeated Wyndmere-Lidgerwood, 3-2; and Hazen knocked off Park-Fordville-Lankin, 3-0
