Terry L. Bartness, 63, Park Rapids, Minn., died on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at his home in Park Rapids.

Terry L. Bartness was born on March 14, 1946, in Fargo. His parents, Tilman and Beverly (Magloughlin) Bartness, raised Terry in Dilworth, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1964. He went on to attend Moorhead State College (MSUM) where he received his bachelor's degree. He later earned his specialist degree in education from North Dakota State University (NDSU). 

He  was united in marriage to Margo Alice Fering on May 18, 1968, in Fargo.

They moved to Appleton, Minn., where Terry was a math teacher until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969. He served as a MP at Hurlong, Calif., until being honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1971. They returned to Appleton, Minn., where he taught until 1976, and then moved to Mayville-Portland, N.D., where he was the high school principal until 1980. 

From 1980 until 1990, they lived in Williston, where he was junior high school principal until 1990. From 1990 until 1996, he was superintendent of schools at Larimore and he served as superintendent of Park Rapids Schools from 1996 until 2001. He finished his career as superintendent of Kelliher Schools from 2002 until his retirement in 2008. Terry was past president of the North Dakota Principals Association. He was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, where he sang in the choir. 

Terry was always active in the communities he lived and worked, belonging to many civic, community and professional organizations over the years.

Terry enjoyed hunting deer, ducks and pheasants. He also liked to fish, especially ice fishing. He enjoyed being active with the Boy Scouts, spending time with his family and grandchildren, watching high school, college and professional sports, including the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Gophers, Brooklyn Dodgers (L.A. now), NDSU Bison, Minnesota State University Dragons and the Minnesota Vikings.

 He served as an assistant coach to every sport. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his warm and friendly smile.

He is survived by his wife, Margo A. Bartness, Park Rapids; his son, Tim Bartness, Park Rapids; his daughter, Tammy (Mike) Stifter, River Falls, Wis.; two grandchildren, Emily and Jaynan; his mother,  Beverly “Bunny”  Bartness, Dilworth, Minn.; three brothers, Roger (Pat) Bartness, Williston, Larry (Anna) Bartness, Panama City, Fla., and Gary Bartness, Lake Jackson, Texas; one sister, Mary Kay (Jerome) Reimche, Moorhead, Minn., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Francis and Mary Magloughlin; his uncles, Donald Magloughlin and Kenny Magloughlin; his brother, Donald Bartness and his father, Tilman Bartness.

His funeral services were on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Park Rapids.

The Rev. Steve Nordby was the officiant. Roz Pederson was the organist. Mary Hanninen was soloist singing “In This Very Room." The Calvary Lutheran Choir sang selected songs.  Congregational Hymns were “Here I Am Lord” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Honorary casketbearers were Bill Beck, Kenny Glimsdal, Mark Williamson, Kevin Skjei, Chuck Hansen, Steve DiBrito, Russ Marshall, Coffee Group, Bruce Gravalin, Pete Boe, all former students, faculty, staff, administrators and school board and community members that worked with Terry over the years. Active casketbearers were Kip Nelson, Jerry Engleman, Dave Robinson, Mark Wenger, Rob Schatz and Chad Hansen. Military honors were provided by the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post #212 Honor Guard Team of Park Rapids. 

A military gun salute was provided by the Star of The North Marine Corp Honors Team. Raymond Vaadeland provided Taps.
