The Williston High School volleyball team wrapped up a spot in next weekend's state tournament with a three-game win over Minot in an elimination match on Saturday in the WDA tournament at Dickinson High School.

Williston won by scores of 28-26, 25-9 and 25-17.

"They started out really rocky," said Williston volleyball coach Rebecca Waitman of Saturday's match. "But then they turned on the light."

The key to Saturday's match was the play of Williston's middle hitters.

"We got some huge hits from our middle hitters," Waitman said. Ashley Slade paced Williston with 13 kills and Jackie Lee had 10 and Dani Clarke finished with seven. Jaden Lynch finished the match with 38 assists. Cassie Thomas had Williston with 17 digs.

Williston was sent to consolation round with a 3-0 loss to Bismarck on Friday evening. Bismarck won the match 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20.

"We did so well," Waitman said of Friday's match. "But we just couldn't get that break. We played a great match."

Clarke led Williston with nine kills, while Lynch had 25 assists and Slade, Thomas and Laura Maleckar each had 20 digs.

The state tournament will open Thursday in Minot. Williston will open play against Fargo South at 2 p.m.

Post season honors

Maleckar and Slade were named to the WDA All-Conference team. Slade and Lynch were selected to the All-Tournament team.
