The Coyotes will send 21 swimmers to the state meet, which gets under way this afternoon in Grand Forks. And though the state meet offers the best North Dakota has to offer, Williston may have faced its more difficult test last weekend.
"This year it's about the West and that's encouraging," said Williston coach Jody Bolinske.
Williston, Minot and Century finished in the top three in the WDA meet. And it seems as though the three schools may continue the dominance this weekend. All three schools are seeded in the top three in all of the relay events for this weekend's meet.
"Our challenge is to rise up and have the best times in an unfamiliar pool," Bolinske said. The unfamiliarity of swimming in Grand Forks is a factor that could ultimately cost the Coyotes a state championship. But it's also an issue that Bolinske says she isn't even going to discuss with her team.
"It's an uncontrollable situation," she said. "We can't control what others have done or the officials."
Based on where the Williston swimmers sit in the state seedings, the Lady Coyotes should be just fine this weekend.
"Based on the state sheet, we should place 11 girls in the top 16," the Williston coach said. "Whether we do or not, we will have to see."
Winning a state championship would be an experience none of the Lady Coyotes would soon forget.
"It would be an phenomenal experience," Bolinske said. "It would be about everyone of their work. This is about the team."
The state meet will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Results will be available at www.ndhsaa.org throughout the weekend.
