A Veterans Day salute is planned at Old Armory Wednesday.

Remembering those who serve is something everyone will be able to do on Wednesday. A Veterans Day program is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Old Armory with Williams County Veterans Service Officer Bob Evans serving as master of ceremonies.

The public is invited to take part in this special salute.

World War II veteran Clayton Benth will deliver the Veterans Day address.

The local program is a combined effort of eight local organizations including the American Legion, Forty et Eight, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans, DAV Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion. A strong showing of support from the community and surrounding area is very important.

SHIMEK FILM IS A MUST SEE

A handful (of area residents) was on hand at the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center on Saturday afternoon to view Watford City-native, Cody Shimek’s, film Small Town Soldiers.

Perhaps the weather was too nice and folks were finishing up their fall chores, but whatever the reason, we can tell you this production is a must see.

This is an incredible first-hand story highlighting McKenzie County World War II veterans.

As a matter of fact this film, which tells the story of all WW II veterans, is so good it should be required viewing in every high school and college in the state.

We learned that on Sunday afternoon more than 200 were on hand to view another showing at the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

To learn more or to obtain a copy you can e-mail Shimek at cody@mediamen.tv.

FORT HOOD STRIKES HOME

With thoughts of Veterans Day just around the corner, that attention took a back seat with the sad affair that took place at Fort Hood in Texas on Friday.

That senseless event left 13 dead and a number wounded with Capt. John Gaffaney, a native of Williston, listed among those losing their lives when a gunman cut loose.

Bringing an event of that magnitude to our doorstep only adds to the impact.

SCOPE SALUTES

This week we reserve a Scope Salute for all veterans who have answered the call during peace and time of battle.

Wednesday is a special day, and if time allows, the least you can do is attend a Veterans Day service.

MIDSHIPMEN SINK IRISH

Speaking as a U.S. Navy veteran, the midshipmen did a lot of sailors past and present proud with a Veterans Day salute by sinking Notre Dame in college football Saturday.

Upon returning home from the Shimek film this only added icing on a wonderful afternoon.

GLORIA DEI BAZAAR

From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday you will be able to cash in on some great antique and collectibles, along with getting your hands on some mighty fine lefse, baked goods and crafts at the annual Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Bazaar.

In addition, rolls, rommegrot, pie and slushburgers will be among the goodies served.

It makes me hungry just listing all the items.

CZECH BOYS CHOIR Visits

Thanks to the Williston Concert Association (WCA), area students and patrons will have an opportunity to hear some great sounds of the Czech Boys Choir “Boni Pueri.”

A free youth outreach concert is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at First Lutheran Church.

Youth attending should be accompanied by an adult.

At 7:30 p.m., also at First Lutheran Church, the WCA members will be in for a real treat.

WCA memberships will be available at the door or you can contact Liz Martin at 572-2818 for membership info.

EMPTY BOWLS EVENT

Here’s a heads up on the fourth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser set for Nov. 19 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

The event will feature bowls made by Williston High art students and along with receiving some tasty soup, sandwich, bar or cookie and beverage, you will be able to keep the bowl as a reminder that there are many empty bowls in the world.

A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the event that is slated to run from 5-7 p.m.
