The Williston High School boys cross country team finished third at Saturday's state cross country meet in Valley City.

The Coyotes finished with 121 total points.

The outcome was a bit of a surprise to the Coyotes.

"We were hoping for fifth," said Williston coach Clint Chamberlin. "That was with good performances from everyone."

The Coyotes got a solid run from Chris Chamberlin, who earned all-state honors by finishing 20th. He ran 10 to 15 seconds faster than expected, according to the Williston coach.

Caleb Shaffer and Nathan Donnelley also earned all-state honors for the Coyotes. Shaffer finished 10th overall with a time of 16 minutes and 33 seconds, while Donnelly was 15th at 16:42.

"The boys ran supper," coach Chamberlin said. "Most of them ran consistent."

Williston was helped on the day by runners Aaron Monson, Brennan Goldade, Peter Norby and Jacob Oleksik, who finished 33rd, 43rd, 61st and 76th, respectively.

“We had some big surprises," the Williston coach said.

Bismarck won the team title with 21 points. Bismarck's Christian Brownotter won the individual title with a time of 15:38.
