Helen V. Johnson 84, Billings, former Poplar resident, died Thursday morning at Eagle Cliff Manor, Billings of natural causes.

She was born May 3, 1925, in McCabe, Mont., the daughter of Charles W. and Ingar Marie (Flansborg) Nelsen.

She received her schooling in Froid, graduating from high school there. She then attended Northern Montana College for two years, receiving her teaching certificate.

She returned to Froid and on Jan. 13, 1945, she was united in marriage to Melvin A. Johnson in Homestead, Mont. He completed his obligation in the military and she taught school in the Froid area.

In 1947, they moved to Poplar, where they raised their family. She worked as a cook in the Poplar School for nine years and was a very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. In 1979, they moved to Culbertson, where they lived until his death in 1991. She moved to Wolf Point in 1992, living in Glasgow for a short time, until moving to Billings in 2006.

Helen loved spending time with her family, canning and with Melvin they enjoyed bowling, dancing, fiddlers’ events and they traveled much of northeastern Montana.

She is survived by five daughters: Ruth (Dennis) Wentz, Minnewaukan, Penny Johnson, Devils Lake, Milly (Doug) Eggebrecht, Wolf Point, June (Brett) Jensen, Billings and Elly (Alvin) Craig, Ellendale, N.D.; 15 grandchildren, three step grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 8 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Howard; three brothers, Hans, Clarence and Carl Nelsen; two grandsons, Larry James Erickson and Wayne Edward Wentz and one great-grandson, Timothy Wentz.

The funeral services for Helen V. Johnson are Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Culbertson Methodist Church, with interment to follow in the Ebenezer Cemetery, McCabe, Mont.

Visitation is Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, from 4-6 p.m. at the church. The Cloyd Funeral Home & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Friends are asked to make memorials to the American Legion Auxiliary of Poplar or the charity of their choice, and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
