FBI links for Krimm grows to 11 cases

An FBI investigation into the past of the Valley City man who robbed a Williston bank last month before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound is still in its early stages. The agency investigation so far, however, has shown James Krimm was likely responsible for numerous other robberies.

Special Agent E.K. Wilson of the FBI Minneapolis Division said Krimm, 42, may have been responsible for 11 other bank robberies in the past five years. He robbed the north branch of Williston’s American State Bank of an undisclosed large amount of money last month before dying in a field near Fortuna.

Of the robberies the FBI believes it has found a link to Krimm, six were in North Dakota, two each in South Dakota and Minnesota and one in Iowa.

Wilson said the investigation is likely to last for several more weeks, but further details are likely to be uncovered.

“We’re still reviewing other cases as well, and that number likely could increase,” said Wilson. Wilson said evidence such as descriptions from witnesses at scenes of other robberies, surveillance camera footage and patterns in method of operation in the robberies they’ve looked at point toward Krimm’s involvement.

“From cases we’ve reviewed so far, that number, 11, we think he was at least involved with,” said Wilson.

Wilson said the bureau couldn’t reveal what cities the other bank robberies were in at this time or if there were any accomplices.

“If we revealed that information in advance, any prosecution is pretty much shot,” said Wilson.

Wilson said another main object of the agency investigation is trying to piece together Krimm’s past. The bureau is trying to understand where Krimm lived over the past several years and who he may have known or what business may have employed him.

“He apparently lived a very transient lifestyle. His last known address was in Valley City, N.D.,” said Wilson.

Wilson said Krimm likely moved around a lot and stayed at various places in the United States and Canada.

Anyone who may have come into contact with Krimm in either a residential or workplace setting is asked to please contact the Fargo Residential Agency of the FBI at 701-232-7241.
