Williston defeated Mandan in the consolation title match 3-2.
It was a match in which Williston assistant coach Tim Christen coached against his brother, Paul, who is the head coach of the Mandan team.
“In all honesty, it was one of the top moments of my life in tennis,” the Williston assistant coach said of facing his brother.
With the match tied at 2-2, Jordan Nelson defeated Jordan Boehm in the No. 1 singles match to secure the win for Williston. “When or lose, I was just going to be happy,” Christen said.
That wasn’t the only highlight of the tournament for Williston.
Nelson and Heath Glenn finished second overall in doubles. They lost to a team from Grand Forks Red River on Saturday in the title match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
“There’s no disappointment at all,” Christen said. “They played a close match. They were just happy to be there.”
Christen says Nelson and Glenn defeated three teams from the east to get to the title match, including a team from Fargo Shanley in the semifinals.
“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” he said.
The weekend also served as a wake-up call of sorts to the rest of the state about Williston.
“Those two and Williston as a whole got a lot of respect,” Christen said. “No body believes we can play tennis in Williston.”
