This evening's contest at Cutting Field is set for 7 p.m.
"They run a lot of similar stuff to us," said Williston football coach Todd Matthews. "They've had a couple of wins."
The Indians (2-3) come into tonight's game fully capable of lighting up the scoreboard. On the season, Mandan is averaging 25.6 points a game and has scored at least 30 points in three games. The Indians scored 50 points in a overtime win against Fargo North on Sept. 18. Mandan also put 36 points on the scoreboard in a win over West Fargo on Aug. 28.
However, the Indians are also giving up points in bunches. Mandan has allowed no fewer than 28 points in all five of its games this season. "It's very capable of being a shootout," Matthews said.
In order for the Coyotes to survive a high-scoring contest, the offense must play solid for four quarters.
"We've got to convert on some of those drives," the Williston coach said. "We've got to start early."
Williston also needs to get the job done on the defensive side of the ball.
“We’ve got to make stops on defense,” the Williston coach said.
With this evening's contest being Homecoming, the annual Mac Nelson award will be handed out to the top player on each side of the ball for Williston. The winners of the award will be announced in Sunday's sports section of the Williston Herald.
The award was started by the Herald to recognize the top player on each side of the ball in the annual Homecoming clash.
It was started in honor of the late Mac Nelson, who was instrumental in promoting Williston High School football.
After this evening's contest, the Coyotes will play at Bismarck on Oct. 10.
