The home of the Williston State College baseball team has a new name.

The Phil Rabon Field was officially dedicated Friday in between a pair of exhibition games involving Williston State College and Miles City Community College.

"I would like to thank all those who donated finances, labor (and time) to this great facility," Rabon said in a statement to those in attendance.

Rabon, originally of Velva, came to Williston State College in 1965. In roughly 30 years of service at the school, he served in a variety of capacities, including baseball coach, athletic director and women's basketball coach. He founded the women's basketball program in 1972.

"Williston State College is on the move," Rabon said in his remarks. "All you people that support (the school) now and in the future are going to have something to be proud of." The project to upgrade the field began in the spring of 2006 when the school approached a few members in the community for some donations to get the project started.

"As with all projects, this took us a little longer than we would have liked," said Williston State College athletic director Hunter Berg to those in attendance."But it's been rewarding."

The location where the field is originally had four softball fields on it. Over the years, it was turned into a baseball and football field.

According to Berg, a state mandate says the location where the field is had to be used for some sort of recreational use.

The dedication of the field is not the final step in the project.

"We by no means are done with this project," Berg said.

Rabon has a special place in his heart for those at Williston State College.

"This is the place where the people truly make the difference," he said.

In his remarks, Rabon expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all of his former players, friends, members of the community, the students, faculty and administration of WSC, and to his family, including his wife, Sharon

" Iread the excellent story on the dedication of the Phil Rabon Baseball Field. I am pleased to say that I had a part in bring Phip to the "UND Williston Center" in 1965. At that time I was on the staff at the Center. I first met Phil when I was teaching high school in Velva, ND. Phil and a few others played a key role in building the new lighted baseball field in 61/62.

I was delighted to hear that Phil was recognized for his outstanding service to the Williston State College. The baseball field in his name is a great and appropriate jesture. I wish you well Phil, your friend "Zip" "

" This man deserves this honor and much more!! He dedicated his life to WSC and when it was UND-W he was the man!
I had Phil as a coach when I was on the first woman's basketball team, and I was lucky enough to be a co-worker at the college for 12 yrs. His energy never wore out, he is one wonderful, kind, motivating person! Hats off to Phil Rabon, he is one very special person that did so much for the college and the city of Williston. YEAH PHIL!!! " Congratulations Dad! You have dedicated so much of your time and energy to WSC. You have touched the lives of players, students, and faculty with your character, enthusiasm, and integrity. The college has been an important part of your career and life. I am delighted that this field has been named in your honor. I will need to bring your three grandchildren to the field to hit baseballs and run bases with you! Go Tetons! "

" Although I live too far away to have been part of the dedication ceremony, I was certainly there in heart and spirit! As a little kid, I recall helping Dad drag watering hoses and pipes around the lower playing field in his endless persuit of greening-up the fields and bettering Teton athletic facilities. Though he likes to think he's officially retired, we all know that his dedication and service seem to continue daily. I'm so pleased his passion and work for WSC is being recognized with the naming of the field. Now, it's time to "play ball" - which is what Dad would want most.

" Coach Phil Rabon is a man truly deserving of recognition such as this. My years at UND-Williston were in 1977 and 1978. While there, Coach Rabon asked if I would keep the official book for the Women's Basketball games, and, I was happy to do that. Doing him a little favor like that set the wheels in motion to really get to know this man and to witness his character. I am happy to say that our friendship has worn the test of time. Several times I received phone calls from Coach Rabon when I lived (20 years) in the eastern part of the state, of which the purpose was to let me know about possible positions out in the western part of the state. He could sense I wanted to get back to the area. His presence in our community, his humor, his humility, and his dedication to to his wife, family, and Williston State (in that order :) will all be things I remember about Coach Rabon. Great job Coach and congratulations on your well deserved recognition! "
