Trenton holds on for home victory

The Trenton volleyball team earned enough chances to put away Bainville, Mont., on Monday night in Trenton during a 3-2 victory.

The Tigers won the first and third games but fell back into a tie each time. They then trailed 12-4 in the final game before rallying to tie, and then faced down two game points for Bainville before winning the fifth game 17-15.

The final score of the match was 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 12-25, 17-15.

"It was crazy," said senior middle hitter Courtney Moran. "We really pulled together as a team tonight. (Our coach is gone) and we wanted to give her a good call tonight."

Moran teamed up with outside hitter Julia Donoven to key the comeback. The Tigers won a point in the fifth game to make the score 12-5 Bainville with Trenton on the serve. With Hannah Ness serving, Moran put away four of the next six points and Donoven finished the other two. Then a Bainville hitting error tied the game, and Trenton went on to win the game 17-15 to seal the match.

Ness led the team with six digs, while Charalyn Vondall and Brooklyn Hurley had four each. Setter Siera Zimmerman had 37 assists, and Ness had a team-high four blocks, while Moran blocked three times and Kodi Brodhead had two.

Trenton will host Trinity Christian on Thursday.

In other action Monday night, Divide County defeated Ray in four games, winning by scores of 17-25, 25-21, 25-16 and 26-24

Cross Country

Three Tioga-Trinity Christian runners and one Ray runner competed in Mandan on Saturday.

TTC's Kelsey Lambrecht finished in 64th place with a time of 17:30 in the varsity girls 4K division.

Josh Craig and Denver Ruppert ran in the boys 5K junior varsity division.

Josh Craig, competing in his first cross country meet, finished 31st in a field of 105 with a time of 19:30 in the boys 5k division. Denver Ruppert followed in 71st place in a time of 21:49.

Ray's Kaylee Knudson, a seventh-grader, played 25th in a field of 70 in the junior-high girls 3K race in 14:50.

Next competition for the T-TC teams will be Saturday Sept. 19 at Valley City.
