Joyce A. Chapman was born in New Rockford, on Nov. 19, 1937, to Joe and Audrey (Thompson) Chapman. She was raised in Grace City and educated at the Cherry Lake School Number Three.

On July 9, 1958, Joyce was united in marriage to Stanley Johnson in Jamestown. The couple established their home in Devils Lake before moving to Cut Bank, Mont., in 1965. The family stayed in Cut Bank until 1976, when they moved to Culbertson, where Joyce lived until her death.

Joyce was an avid collector of Barbie dolls, accumulating over 200 dolls, most still in their boxes and in pristine condition. She was also a collector of coins. She loved having her grandchildren come to Culbertson to stay for the summer and she enjoyed visiting with her friends.
