Berthal M. (Bert) Peterson was born on Nov. 16, 1912, in Aure, Minn., to Halvor and Anna (Lien) Peterson. He was the fourth of eight children.
He started work in the grocery business in Elbowoods in 1934 and later went to work for Red Owl stores in Scobey, Mont., and Stanley from 1936 to 1941.On June 30, 1940, Bert was united in marriage to Lykke Christenson at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. On Feb. 11, 1941, Bert and Lykke moved to Tioga and purchased the I.G.A. store from Glen Mark. They named their new store the Tioga Food Market, which they operated until 1963. They also built the Tastee Freeze, which they operated for five years. After selling the store, Bert did carpenter work with his brother, Percy.
Before Tioga had an ambulance service, people would ask Bert, or he would volunteer to take their loved ones to doctors and hospitals near and far as he owned Nash vehicles and they had reclining seats so the patients could lie down.
Bert was very active in his church and community. He was a member of the Tioga Commission when Tioga changed from a village to a city. He was a lifetime member of the Tioga Fire Department and received his 55-year pin from the North Dakota Fireman’s Association. He was honored as a member of the Tioga Ambulance for 38 years of service. He also sat on the Tioga Hospital Board when it was being planned and built. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Tioga, where he served many years on the Zion Cemetery Board and the board of trustees. Bert is survived by his sister, Marion Hingst, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Hazel Peterson, Margaret Peterson and Norma Peterson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lykke in 1993; his parents; sister, Arvilla and brothers, Percy, Harvey, Orville, Oscar and Raymond.
Friends may call at the Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga on Wednesday from 1-5 p.m., on Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and an hour prior to services at the church.
