Bud Berg died unexpectantly at the Trinity Medical Center, Minot, on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, after an apparent heart attack.

He was born at Carrington on May 25, 1925, the son of Wilford and Loretta (Cope) Berg. He was raised on the family farm in a Lutheran tradition and educated in a rural setting. At an early age, Bud learned to work hard, first in the local area as a farm hand and later as a logger in Oregon and the shipyards in California during the war years. He returned to North Dakota and was employed for a time at a Chevy dealership in Carrington as a mechanic and later in Crosby. He met and was united in marriage to Mildred Bakke at Plentywood, Mont., in 1953. Together they raised three children. This marriage ended in divorce.

Bud worked in the Williston area for several different companies, SECO Truck Shop and Meade Campers, and during the oil boom, DL Crane services, Borsheim Crane Service, WISCO's and as a ranch hand for Buck Scheele. Bud was united in marriage later in life to Ardith (Ardy) Detke on Aug. 12, 2000, in Alamo. Together, Bud and Ardith enjoyed time at the Moose Lodge and dancing every opportunity they could find. Ardith preceded Bud in death on Aug. 17, 2005.

Bud filled his days with hobbies that included woodworking and iron works. He reminisced about earlier days on the Triple "R" Pony Ranch just on the northwest edge of Williston where he raised his family and many horses. He loved the horseman way of life. As of late, he enjoyed his friends at the Moose and Gramma Sharon’s restaurant where he dined often.

Bud is survived by his children, Rodney Berg and Robyn Melling, both of Williston and Roger Berg, Mascoutah, Ill.; four grandchildren, Chantel Berg, Amy (David) Schmit and John and Mike Melling; one great-grandson, Gabrial Berg; step-children, Travis Detke, Kathy Detke, Carla Miller, Kim Miller, Colette Erdman, Coleen Detke and a very special friend, Ramona Parpart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ardith (Ardy) Berg; a grandson, Chase Berg and sister, Carol Jean Heinitz.

Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston is assisting the family.
