Archie Lalim, 80, Madison, Conn., formerly of Tioga, died on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, Conn. Friends may sign the online register book and give their condolences at www.fulkersons.com.

His funeral service was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Tioga. The Rev. Roger Olson officiated. Interment with military honors was in the Lindahl Cemetery north of Tioga.

Archie was born Dec. 29, 1928, on the family homestead in Lindahl Township, Williams County, to Thrond and Arnbjorg Lalim. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Lindahl Church north of Tioga. He attended Lindahl School through the first grade, after which he attended grade school and high school at Tioga.

Archie attended Augsburg College, Minneapolis. Upon his graduation, he taught school at Palermo for one year.

In 1991, Augsburg College awarded Archie the Distinguished Alumni Award. During the Korean War, Archie joined the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, and in Denver.

Upon his discharge, Archie went to work for YMCC, a division of General Motors, Denver. YMCC would eventually become GMAC. While working in Denver, Archie met his future wife, Denise VanValkenburg of Worchester, Mass.

As Archie received promotions, he and his family, which now consisted of two little boys, were transferred to many different cities in many different states. His last move took him to New York City where he was the control branch manager of the New York City branch of GMAC.

After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Madison, Conn., where he continued to live after he and his wife were divorced.

Archie had many friends in Madison and belonged to the Winter Club and the Madison Golf Club. He had a great passion for golf and was very proud of the two “holes in one” he made on the ninth hole.

He also kept up with the UCONN girls basketball games on TV. Discussing current politics with his brother, Lester, was a daily occurrence.

Archie was very interested in his family heritage and made two trips to Norway to meet family and to see where his parents were from. He also kept up with all of his siblings and their families.

Archie is survived by his son, Gary and his wife, Mary; two grandchildren, Marise E. and Trond I. Lalim, all of Noblesville, Ind.; long time friend, Gail Wood, Madison, Conn.; his brother, Lester and his wife, Lila, Tioga; sisters-in-law, Alma Lalim, Tioga, and Laura Lalim, Yuba City, Calif., and many nieces, nephews and cousins both in the United States and in Norway.

Preceding Archie in death are his son, Gregory; his parents; five brothers, Arthur, Ernest, Iver, Carl, and John and two sisters, Mabel and Doris.
