The Williston High girls golf team was the fourth-best team from the West and eighth overall on Monday after the first day of the East-West Classic tournament at the Jamestown Hillcrest Municipal golf course.

Williston’s 412 came in two shots ahead of the host’s 412, and Fargo Shanley (337) leads defending state champions Minot by 16.

The second and final day of play begins today at 11 a.m. The golfers are hoping for better weather after a cold, chilly and sometimes rainy day on Monday.

Miranda Zavalney shot a 44-46 90 to  bounce back from her 99 at Friday’s Turtle Mountain Invite. She sits in 13th place in the individual standings.  Last year’s state champion, Jamestown junior Laura Kraft, is the one-day leader with a 74.

Kayla Barke put up her career-low varsity score with a 43-50 93, and Anna Peterson continued to improve with a 49-53 102. Abby Wilt, in her first year of golfing, made her varsity debut for the Coyotes after Rachel Anderson was forced to withdraw, and Wilt shot a 63-64 127.

“I hope we stay consistent on the second day,” said coach Dennis Healy. “I’d like to see us stay in the top 10, that would be a real goal. These are all of the state tournament teams, most likely, so we’d like to get a pretty good spot.”
