The Keybirds picked up a 12-1 win over Spearfish, S.D., in American Legion baseball action on Thursday night.
The game scheduled for nine innings was called after seven due to the 10-run rule.
The Keybirds are 5-0 on their current road trip and have won nine of their last 11 games, dating back to a split with Jamestown on July 7.
“They said they were good,” said Williston coach Chip Devlin. “But we beat them like they weren’t good.” In addition to another strong offensive performance by his team, Devlin got a solid outing from starting pitcher Eric Olson.
Olson pitched the first six innings, allowing one run on four hits.
“He pitched fantastic,” Devlin said of Olson.
Derrick Linghor pitched the seventh inning to close out the game.
Doug Richter had a three-run home run to pace the Keybirds. Casey Gardner hit a triple, while Linghor finished with a double and two RBIs.
“We’ve just been doing what we have been doing,” the Williston coach said. “The kids hit from the get-go.”
Devlin says that his team is playing its best ball of the season.
“The kids are hitting real well,” he said. “The kids know that we are limited on pitching. When we go out and get three or four runs in the first inning, it helps the pitcher to relax.”
Williston will play in Rapid City, S.D., this evening against Post 320. The Keybirds will conclude the road trip on Sunday with a game at Dickinson.
A boxscore from Thursday’s game was not available at press time.
