Youth Education on Stage performances begin today

Youth Education on Stage begins its 25th birthday season with a summer favorite, “Summer Shorts,” a 10-minute play festival.

This offers some of the best from playwrights from across the United States for three performances Tuesday through Thursday, June 23-25 at the Williston Old Armory Theatre.

“This is our fourth season to present this popular series,” said director and co-founder Jack Dyville. “And we are thrilled to again present 10 fun, fast-paced little shows in one evening that gives each student an opportunity to sink their teeth into acting and creating a role.”

Dyville is a published playwright who puts out a call each December and by March had received over 75 plays. He and co-director David Gillam Fuller and a reading committee go through each script to find the right mix and match for the students and the Williston community.

In one week’s time, the directors put the young actors through their paces for an opportunity to shine. Each play is adjudicated on the three evenings with guest judges from the local community theatre and the Williston area, focusing strictly on the writing. Awards are given to the top three playwrights.

An audience favorite is also presented, along with 10 students selected as outstanding performance nominees.

This year’s plays include “The Adventures of Rocky & Skye & Grant” by Kelly DuMar of Sherborn, Mass.; “Annierella & the (Very Awesome) Good Queen Fairy CowMother” by Bobbi A. Chukran of Leander, Texas; “Attack of the Cooties” by Zach Rothman-Hicks of New York; “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” by Ron Frankle, New Lebanon, N.Y.; “Nick Tickle, Fairy Tale Detective” by Steph DeFerie, Harwich, Mass.; “Premature” by Russ Weeks, Seattle, Wash., and “The Tale of Peter Rabbit & Benjamin Bunny” by Evan Guilford-Blake, Stone Mountain, Ga.

There also is “The Guitar Hero” by North Dakota’s own Kathy Coudle-King of Grand Forks and “Dog Day Afternoon” by Claudia Haas of White Bear, Minn. Dyville’s “The Precious Gift” also is to be performed but is not part of the competition.

Co-producer and costumer is B. Michael Quale with Dyville, Fuller and Kayla Stamp serving as stage directors. There are 47 local students featured and they include:
