Loren Skaare, 71, a longtime Williston resident, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2009, his granddaughter’s birthday, at the Mercy Medical Center, Williston.

His funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Williston. The Rev. David Halaas is officiating.

A family service, open to family and friends, is at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Loren Larry Skaare was born in Velva on April 19, 1938, to Ivan and Cora (Hage) Skaare. He lived in Alamo until the age of 7. In 1945, the family moved to Williston, where he attended grade school and high school.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

As a teenager, his love for music began. He bought a guitar and would practice for hours. In later years, he started playing the drums and played locally for several bands.  Also as a teenager, he became fascinated with old classic cars. He modified his first car in 1956 when he and some friend started the Pacemaker Car Club. Since that time, he has built and restored several old model cars and motorcycles.

From 1960-62, he served in the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Riley in Kansas.

On April 25, 1964, he was united in marriage to Jan Smith in Williston. They resided in Williston until 1965, at which time they moved to Wisconsin. While living there, he and some friends formed a band called “Spacemen” and they traveled throughout the state performing. Loren wrote, and the band recorded, a song called “Spacewalk,” that drew national and international attention.

While in Wisconsin, their daughter, Jill, was born and the three resided there until 1967, when they returned to Williston.

In Williston, Loren worked for the Associates Financial Services. In the 1970’s, he formed his own company, Badland Power Center, selling motorcycles and snowmobiles. He owned and operated Badland until 1988, when the family moved to Arizona, where he resided until 2003.

Upon retiring, he returned to Williston and was currently employed at Murphy Motors.

Loren was a very loving and compassionate person. Everyone who knew him grew to love him. He had a wonderful sense of humor with a smile on his face all of the time, a smile that will last in the hearts of all of us who knew and loved him.

He loved his family so much and was so proud of them. He had much pride in his daughter, Jill, and his grandchildren, Chelsea Lauren, Tate, Jace and Justin, and his newly born great-grandson, Rory Tate, whom he was so looking forward to seeing.

He was a member of the Gateway Baptist Church in Gilbert, Ariz. While in Arizona, he was faithful in playing his guitar in church every Sunday.

He was also a member of the Road Aces Car Club, a charter member of the Pacemaker Car Club, a charter member of the N.D. Street Rod Association, the Sundowners Motorcycle Club and the Williston Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his mother, Cora Gaffke; his daughter, Jill Skaare, and her fianc©, Bob Forsberg, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Jan Skaare of Gilbert; sisters, Ione (Don) Nice of Williston, Donna (Milt) Gienger of Williston and Vicki (Scott) Brokaw of Maple Grove, Minn.; brothers, Larry (Karen) Skaare of Williston and Jeff Skaare of Williston; his grandchildren, Chelsea Heide, Tate (Lena Quinn) Heide, Jace Forsberg and Justin Bradley of Gilbert; his great-grandchildren, Rory Heide and Hailey Bradley; a very special person in his life, Judee Engmann of Williston; his aunts, Edna Swenson, Marion Skaare and Esther Hage and by several nieces and nephews.
