It was the kind of round that no other Williston High golfer has experienced in nearly seven years. Evanson shot a career-best 75 at the event in Rolla to claim medalist honors.
He is the first golfer from Williston since Adam Zander in 2001 to accomplish such a feat.
"I showed up and played my game," he said.
However, his round was nearly over before it even started. Evanson struggled mightily on the first hole. "That's the best I have golfed in my life," he said. "It started out bad. I had a triple bogey on the first hole."
But he quickly put the disastrous hole behind him.
Evanson followed that up with 10 straight pars and a birdie.
"It was like I was playing hockey," the Williston junior said of his mindset. "I wasn't thinking."
His round of 75, surpassed his previous career-best of 78, which was set one day earlier at the Jamestown Invitational.
"I just golfed my way," he said of the weekend.
While others may stress over the game, Evanson approaches the game of golf in a light-hearted sort of way.
"I like the relaxing part of the game," he said. "The game I play (hockey) is highly intense."
But that's not to say he doesn't get frustrated at times being out on the course.
"This is the worst part of the game," Evanson said while looking for a ball in some brush during a recent round at the Links of North Dakota.
Although he enjoys the game, his true love lies elsewhere.
"I'd rather be playing hockey," he said.
But he still puts in the time and practice necessary to succeed in his second-favorite sport.
"I practice almost every day," Evanson said. "I work here (at the Links), so I try to get in as many rounds as I can."
Evanson and the rest of the Coyotes will participate in the WDA West Region meet on Tuesday.
Evanson enters the meet as 16th in the WDA in scoring average at 80.86. The top 10 automatic qualify for state.
