Patrol seat belt effort is under way

As the weather warms up and more people begin to hit the roadways, the potential for accidents increases. The simple act of wearing a seat belt could be the difference in walking away from an accident.

Area and state law enforcement hopes to increase those odds for any and all people on North Dakota roads as they join the national "Click it or Ticket" mobilization by ramping up seat-belt enforcement across the state.

Click it or Ticket is a two-week effort that started on Monday and runs through May 31. The North Dakota Highway Patrol is maintaining a more visible presence on area roadways as they work overtime during this period. The Patrol is watching and aggressively enforcing seat belt laws during what is typically the first major traveling period for motorists of the summer -- Memorial Day weekend.

Capt. Alan Billehus of the North Dakota Highway Patrol Williston District Office said there are nine officers from the area on the roads in the coming weeks. He said they are working to make sure people are buckling up and being safe throughout the day and over the holiday weekend.

"We're dedicating the extra hours to looking for people who aren't buckling up. It's just a good concerted effort to keep people safe and it's good to get people in the mindset," said Billehus. Billehus said the fine for not wearing a seat belt is $20 for people 18 and over and $25 for not having infants, small children or passengers ages 17 and under buckled up properly. He said they do see an increase in tickets during this stretch because of the extra effort looking for violations. But overall, an increase in the number of people wearing their seat belts in North Dakota is promising.

"We've seen a statewide increase in the number of seat belt usage. A lot of people are doing the right thing," said Billehus.

Billehus said although a majority of people buckle up, there is that minority who rush and forget to put it on or don't bother thinking they're only going a short distance to run an errand or go to work.

"You never know when you're going to be in an accident. Anything can happen between your home and where you're going, no matter how short the distance. It's really just a simple thing to do," said Billehus.

Billehus said he's heard if you have someone do something daily for about two weeks, it can become a habit. He said wearing a seat belt also could become a habit if done long enough.

"I don't know if there's any correlation between the two weeks of this campaign and that, but we just hope it makes people get the message," said Billehus.

Troopers are joining with over 12,000 state and local law enforcement agencies across the country for the Click it or Ticket campaign. Funding for this operation is being provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

As of Wednesday, 33 people have died this year in North Dakota traffic accidents. Of those, 20 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

In the last four years over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, 10 people have died on North Dakota highways.

" thanks to the other people for the support. just for the record, i happen to work in local law enforcement, just didn't want to make it look that way in my original post. i have had the not fun occasion of going to fatality crashes, and doing death notifications. and yes, those images do stick with you when you're lying in bed that night. it is part of the job, but definitely the least enjoyable part i've had so far. also, i do not work for the WPD, but as far as keeping OHV's off the streets, they are likely busy with domestics and such. " I fully agree with you supporter. Yes it is your choice as an adult to wear your seatbelt, that is why you can not get pulled over just for not wearing your seatbelt unless you are under the age of 18. There must be probable cause to pull you over on the first place. The local police officers do not make the laws, they just are law enforcement officers, hence the name they carry. If you were the one who just came home from a day of work where somebody pulled a knife on you, or you got called to a car accident, where say there are no fatalaties but there are injuries, you don't think that this affects the officers. Or if when these officers go to bed, and they have image in their head of the fatality that were at earlier in the shift, whould you be able to sleep at night? It is just one more way to make their jobs a little easier. If you ONLY knew what the Williston Law Enforcement actually do in their jobs, you would definitly have a better appreciation!!! "

" knelsen, I can tell you why it is the police force's business to enforce this legislative law. When you get into an automobile accident and are thrown from your vehicle because you didn't wear your seatbelt it more that likely will result in an injury that could have been prevented. You cause the cost of health care to rise for everyone because you need an ambulance, take up valuable space in the ER, need an ER staff. You cause more tax dollars for officers to conduct an investigation, lawyers and judges to possibly hear a trial... etc. "

" police officers go into their jobs knowing they may very well see nasty gore during their careers, however i'm sure it's not an enjoyable part of the job. the reason most patrol officers like seat belt enforcement is because it's alot easier to write a citation, than to scrape your dead remains off the roadway, and then go tell your family that you're dead. fyi, police officers don't make laws, they just enforce the laws that are in place. "

" Can somebody please explain to me WHY it is the police force's business if I, as an adult, wear a seatbelt or not. Why is it THEIR decision?? I don't understand. Shouldn't it be my own personal decision? Everyone hears the stories "if so and so whould have been wearing a seatbelt, they would have died"...blah blah blah......and I'm one them that has that story. So shouldn't it be MY choice??? "

" Ya right, the city police cant even keep the kids that ride four wheelers and dirt bikes off the city streets or sidewalks..... "

" I never buckled up, until I started about 9 years ago when my grand daughter insisted that I do so. After a week, it was a habit that I still do each time I get into a car. It's stupid and dangerous not to buckle up. Give it a try for those you love. "
