Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 11:01 AM CDT

Henry N. Marxen Sr., 92, Mountain View, Ark., passed away Easter Sunday morning, April 12, 2009, at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake, in the care of his family.

The Mass of Christian burial for Henry is at 10 a.m. on June 20, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mountain View with the Rev. John Lewandowski officiant. Interment will follow at the cemetery.

Henry was born on Jan. 12, 1917, the son of Dominic J. and Mary (Oeffling) Marxen in Minneapolis and then was reared and educated in Rosemount, Minn. As a young man, he worked on the family’s commercial vegetable and dairy farm.

Eventually, Henry’s career would be that of a machinist and farmer until he retired in 1977. He worked for many years with the Minneapolis Moline Company and later for the Northern Ordinance Company, which manufactured turrets for ships during World War II.

Henry was united in marriage to Fay Sheaffer of the Carrington area on March 12, 1938. Together they had four children. They made their homes in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Arkansas. They both loved the four seasons, the serenity and beauty of the mountains and the arts and crafts of the Mountain View area where they made their home through the years. Fay died on Feb. 6, 1997.

Henry and Fay enjoyed traveling to visit family. They never put sight-seeing as the priority; visiting relatives, playing cribbage and tripoly, saying the rosary and being witnesses to their faith were most important to them. Henry never lost his love of the sod and soil of this land and enjoyed gardening for many years.

With true faith and love of God, Henry and Fay were instrumental in the establishment of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mountain View. They held services in their home for many months until they were able to rent space, then eventually build a brand new church.

He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and supporter of Right To Life. This legacy of faith, hope in God’s mercy and love of family will live on in our hearts and memories. He will be dearly missed by all.

Henry is survived by his loving children, Henry N. (Sandra) Marxen Jr. of Williston, Jerard D. (Patsy) Marxen of Quasqueton, Iowa, and Dorothy Marxen Barrows-Roder of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Christina (Monte) Chalk and their children Alex and Dixie of Colfax, Wis.; Pam (Dan) Schneider and their children Jacquelyn Williams and Jasmine Zenisek of Chippewa Falls, Tony (Lindsey) Roder of Milwaukee, Wis., Heidi (Dean) Bittner and their children Jessica, Natalie and Nicholas of Devils Lake, Henry N.
