The Williston Rural Fire Department was called out sometime between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to a Stoney Creek School building, located about four miles east of Williston. The fire was under the building, which is a modular structure. The fire was put out within a few minutes, said Dave Benthe, rural ire chief.
The fire may have been caused by heat tape and it’s being called an electrical fire, Benthe said. There were no injuries.
An ambulance was sent at 4:39 p.m. to be on stand-by and the Williams County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.
District 8 superintendent Greg McNary said he is meeting with insurance adjusters later today to determine if the structure can still be used or if it’s a total loss. Most the damage is on the underside of the building, he said. For now, second- and third-grade students are going to Round Prairie, located about 17 miles west of Williston, McNary said. He hopes that won’t be the case for long.
“That’s not an ideal situation for the kids,” McNary said.
