Steven Serdahl

Steven D. Serdahl, 58, Mandaree, died at his home on Thursday, March 12, 2009.

His funeral service is at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Mandaree High School. Spencer Wilkinson Sr. will officiate and interment will be held at the Serdahl Family Cemetery.

Wake services are Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Mandaree High School. Friends are encouraged to sign the online register book and give their condolences at www.fulkersons.com.

Steven Douglas Serdahl was born to Milo and Olga Serdahl on Nov. 20, 1950, in Powers Lake. He received his education and graduated from Columbus High School in 1968. He continued his education at Minot State College majoring in art. He graduated from college in 1971.

Upon his college graduation, Steve took a job as director of the Minot Art Gallery and taught for one year in Minot. In 1973, he started a new teaching position in Mandaree as the art teacher. Each year, Steve would hold an art show to showcase all of the student’s artwork, paintings, drawings, beadwork, God’s eyes, leather work, war bonnets and various other projects. Steve also taught art for the community college.

Steve was the principal and later became the superintendent of Mandaree School. While at Mandaree School, he became a mentor to several of his students. He was also a cross country coach for many years. After 31 years in education, Steve retired in 2003.

In 2006, Steve worked building earth lodges in New Town for tourism. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

In 1978, Steve married Veronica Bell at the Mandaree Congregational Church in Mandaree. The couple was married for 30 years. Steve loved his wife and family very much. Roni was the love of his life.

Steve was adopted by Susan Charging and also was adopted into the Chicken Clan. He was given the name Four Feathers, which he was very proud of. Steve will be greatly missed.

Steve is survived by his wife, Veronica; sons, Cody (Rachel) Serdahl of Hazen, Laramie Serdahl of Mandaree and Murphy (Bobbie) Young Bird; daughters, Angela Young Bird and Shyenne Young Bird, both of New Town; 14 grandchildren; mother, Olga Hanson of Columbus, N.D.; brother, Gary Serdahl of Spokane, Wash., and niece, Barbara Sharp of Spokane.

He was preceded in death by his father, Milo Serdahl and son, George Young Bird.

Fulkerson Funeral Home of Watford City is assisting the family with arrangements.
