The Williston High boys basketball team defeated Wahpeton 54-50 on Friday in the consolation semifinal at the state tournament in Fargo.

Neither team wanted to go home early.

The Huskies and Coyotes played hard for the entire game before Williston came away with a 54-50 win to end the Huskies' season.

The Huskies got the first points of the game on a shot by Jordan Ralph.

CJ Vinger answered back with a three-point shot and a 3-2 Williston lead. Williston made it 5-2 after John Oyloe hit a bucket.

But, the Huskies went on a 11-0 run on shots by Trevor Stevens, Ralph and five points in the run by Bryant Friskop.

The Coyotes' Oyloe broke the Wahpeton streak and the biggest lead by Wahpeton of the half when he hit a shot to make it 13-7 in favor of the Huskies.

Williston's Brent Qvale, who had 10 points in the first half, played strong underneath and started hitting with under 10 minutes to play in the half.

Qvale hit a free throw to cut the Wahpeton lead to 22-20, and Jeff Skadeland tied the game at 22.

Ralph gave the Huskies the lead again at 26-24, but Williston outscored the Huskies 8-1 in the final four minutes and went in at the half leading Wahpeton 30-25.

In the second half, both teams went scoreless until Friskop hit a three-pointer at 15:36, to cut the Coyotes' lead to 30-28.

Friskop led the Huskies with 19 points on the day.

Both teams had opportunities in the next few minutes, but could not take advantage of the other teams missed shots and turnovers.

Skadeland finally broke the scoring slump by both teams with a shot at 10:05, and Williston had a 36-32 lead.

Ralph hit a free-throw to cut the Williston lead to three, but Vinger came right back on the next possession with a three-pointer and the Coyotes were up by six points.

With Williston up by seven, the Huskies started to come back.

Friskop hit two shots in a row to get to within three points.

Later, Ralph got the Huskies to within a point, at 46-45.

With 2:30 left to play, and trailing by four, Friskop hit a three-point shot as the 35 second clock was about to expire and again Wahpeton was down by only a point.

The Coyotes' Oyloe hit two free-throws with 1:30 left, to keep Williston up by three, but Ralph scored on a lay in with 33 seconds left to keep it a one point game.

Tyler Eiken scored for Williston when he got behind the Wahpeton press and converted a lay up.

VInger added a free-throw for Williston to make it a four point game.

Friskop tried a last second three-point shot, but it wouldn't fall and Qvale grabbed the rebound to seal the win for Williston.

" When is WHS going to realize that they are being out coached??? Williston has had great players, like Hennessey and both Qvale boys. Yet, with all of that talent Williston has yet yield any state titles. In my mind, that is pathetic!!! "
