Harriet Peterson

Harriet E. Peterson, 92, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and formerly of Valley City, died Monday March 2, 2009, in the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. on Thursday March 5, 2009, in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City with the Rev. Randy Schlecht officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City in the spring.

Visitation is one hour before services in the church Thursday morning.

Harriet Elizabeth Hemmer Peterson was born Feb. 25, 1917, at Litchville, N.D., the daughter of Fred and Alice (Kelley) Hemmer of Hastings, N.D. Harriet moved with her family to Hastings in 1922.

Harriet grew up and attended school at Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School. She continued her education at Valley City State University in Valley City. She taught rural school near Litchville, Galesburg and Horace.

On Dec. 22, 1940, she married Arthur Peterson at Moorhead, Minn. The couple and their family lived in various communities where Arthur was a school principal. Arthur died March 25, 1966. Harriet continued to make her home at Horace, where she continued to teach. She later attended the University of North Dakota and received her degree in 1971. Harriet retired in 1982 and moved to Valley City. For the last six years, Harriet made her home with her daughter Brenda Enget in Audubon, Minn.

Harriet was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City, the church circle of Our Savior’s, The Valley City Area Retired Teachers Organization and the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. Harriet enjoyed reading, cooking, baking and being a seamstress. Most of all, she love her grandkids.

Harriet is survived by her four daughters, Sharon (Gary) Syvertson, Brainerd, Minn., Alice (Wayne) Deck, Wichita Falls, Texas, Connie (David) Pedersen, Williston and Brenda (Jerry) Enget, Audubon; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother, Kenneth Hemmer.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to The Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home of Valley City.
