The Coyotes took fourth in the team standings.
In Class B, New Town’s Billy Hall took home a state title at 145 pounds as the team finished 10th with five place-winners, and Watford City took 12th.
Watford City’s Kirby Knudtson took second at 145 pounds and Brady Lund did the same at 125, two of the Wolves’ six place-winners.
Kenmare-Tioga-Ray placed Braden Overson at 7th place at 125 pounds. Brent Whitney of Bowman County took eighth at 215. “It was a good weekend, we competed every day,” said coach Chuck Michaelson. “All the place-winners just did a bang-up job, we stayed together as a team all weekend.”
Kirby Kain won his third-place match at 112 pounds for the Coyotes, Eddie Maisey placed fourth at 119, Morgan Axelson placed fourth at 135, Jacob Sargent took fifth at 160 pounds, Luke Michaelson took fifth at 189 pounds, and Donovan Sorenson placed fourth at 285 pounds.
Sorenson, seeded seventh in his weight class, lost in the second round to second-seeded Alex Andel, of Valley City, but fought back to win three straight in the wrestlebacks before losing to Andel again in the third-place match.
Luke Michaelson had a pair of tough losses, losing to Fargo South’s Tanner Jones 3-2 in the championship semifinals and to Mandan’s Slade Ternes 2-1 in the wrestleback semis before taking his fifth-place match in a pinfall at 3:30 against Grand Forks Central’s Tom Burns.
Kirby Kain recorded four wins by pinfall at 112 pounds, including his win in 4:16 in the third-place match.
Kain was the weekend’s pin champion, tying with four other wrestlers including teammate Sorenson to have four pins in the competition, with Kain’s coming in the lowest combined time of 10:15.
Sargent improved on his No. 6 seeding to take fifth at 160 pounds, and Axelson knocked off a pair of seeded wrestlers to place fourth at 135.
