Clarice was born in Noonan on Feb. 22, 1933, to Peter and Clara (Berg) Haugenoe. She was confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, graduated from Crosby High School and Trinity School of Nursing. Clarice had an adventurous spirit and was very proud of her nursing profession, living and working in Minneapolis, Chicago and California before returning to Crosby.
On Feb. 22, 1960, Clarice married the love of her life, Charles L. Torgerson. During their 49 years of marriage they raised three children, farmed and traveled in the United States, Mexico and Canada. They also spent many winters in Arizona and Texas to be close to their children. They truly enjoyed each other.
Clarice worked for many years at St. Luke’s Hospital and the Good Samaritan Center. She was also an active participant in the family businesses of farming and in the early years heating and air-conditioning. She was active and held leadership positions in many community and church organizations including the Town and Country Study Club, St. Luke’s Hospital Auxilary and Concordia Lutheran Church Circles. She taught Sunday School at Concordia and volunteered for many community events over the years. Clarice had a passion for flowers and loved her flower gardens in town and on the farm. She was a lifelong learner and loved to read, watch wildlife, play farkel with Charlie, smoke her cigarettes, drink coffee and visit with family and friends for hours, in person and on the phone.
Clarice had many friends across the country and kept in contact with them. Clarice loved to shop and always looked classy. Her grandchildren were precious to her, “what happens at Grandma’s house stays at Grandma’s house,” she has been known to allow water balloons in the kitchen, finger painting on many surfaces, lipstick on treasured dolls and beautiful little faces.
In recent years, Clarice began to paint and created amazing works of art that her family will cherish forever. She most of all loved her time with her husband, children and their families.
Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, David, Milton and Chester; and her niece, Penny Haugenoe.
She is survived by her husband, Charles, and beloved cat, Patches; children, Chandra Torgerson and Rhonda Battleson of Minneapolis, Charles Lynn Torgerson, LaDawn, Hannah and Emma of Minot; Carrie Torgerson Molander, Shane, Alex and Charli of Bismarck. She also leaves behind her sister, Cleo, and Dick Slaaen of Minot; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline “Kay” Haugenoe of Wolf Point, Mont., Joanne Haugenoe of Crosby, nieces, nephews and many, many special friends.
