Postal shipping rates to increase next week

For any last minute Christmas gifts or anything else in need of shipping, you may want to get them in the mail before Jan. 18.

On that Sunday, shipping costs are going to rise, as they do annually.

Theresa Lumley, officer in charge at the Williston Post Office, said this includes express mail, priority mail, parcel select, parcel return select, global express and priority mail international.

"The average increase will be 5.7 percent for express mail," Lumley said. "Flat rate envelopes will be $17.50."

She said express mail was previously $16.50 for the flat rate envelope. "The move to January price changes for shipping services is consistent with our competitors. It provides a clear picture of the affordable services we offer," added Lumley.

However, this increase only applies to shipping services.

"Price changes for mailing services including stamp prices and extra services will be announced in February with implementation in May," said Lumley. "So our annual stamp increases will be in May every year."

" I've heard the stamps machines have been removed because they plan to use machines that take Dollar coins. Ridiculous. They're anticipating the rate increase. "

Fuel costs have fallen so this is not a correct excuse to raise rates. "

" I am curious why the post office leaves notices on residences claiming that they will not deliver mail unless the owner shovels the sidewalk space in front of their house. HOWEVER, the post office HAS NOT shoveled their own handicapped ramp in weeks. Talk about a violation of federal law and outright hypocrisy. "

My rural postal service is excellent. "

" I would love to see mail move into Williston faster. Services like Netflix do not pay off when it takes an extra day or two for them to be deliverd. In small town ND I get my dvd's the second day after I mail them. When I'm in Williston I get them four or five days later. NOT GOOD. "

" rates keep going up & services gets worse. the post office is only open at hours when everyone else is working, no early mornings one day or late evenings a different day. if there was a different way to mail letters like fed ex or ups i would use them. think the postal worker are highly over paid fro the service you get!!! "

" Don't understand why rates go up yet services get poorer all the time - late rural delivery - boxes left open for wind to take mail - removal of stamps in lobby which is a convenience for most - especially rural people - SLOW SNAIL MAIL - the list goes on. Doesn't do any good to complain because NONE of the postal employees do wrong - window or delivery - just ask Theresa. "
