The Coyotes defeated Turtle Mountain on Friday 39-34 in a back-and-forth contest that came down to the final match, then headed down the road and took three varsity firsts and three seconds in Minot.
The Coyotes got pins from Nick Schoedel, Morgan Axelson, Calvin Sandberg, and Jacob Sargent, along with a forfeit victory for Luke Michaelson, taking a 30-28 lead into the 105-pound match between Paul Michaelson and Jacob DeCoteau, the last scheduled match before the two sides split forfeits at 112 and 119.
Needing any kind of victory to seal the match, Michaelson scored two takedowns in the first period to open a 4-1 lead, then two more and a reversal in the second on the way to an 11-5 victory.
Jacob Sargent won the match of the day against Turtle Mountain’s Isiah Davis at 160 pounds. Sargent conceded a takedown to fall behind 0-2, then grabbed a near fall in the second period to make it 3-2 before Davis escaped to tie the score. Davis retaliated with a takedown, but Sargent managed to reverse to tie the score at five and put Davis on his back, fighting for about 30 seconds before winning by pinfall at 3:30. In the Minot tournament, Williston’s three winners were Paul Michaelson at 103 pounds, Taylor Stenson at 152 and Luke Michaelson at 189. Kirby Kain at 119, Jacob Sargent at 160 and Matt Jensen in the heavyweight division all finished second.
The tournament discontinued team scoring this season.
