Coach Chuck Michaelson has more than 30 wrestlers on his roster, including seven ranked in the top six in the state in the opening poll and 10 returning state qualifiers.
The Coyotes were ranked fifth in the state and second in the West Region behind Bismarck in the state poll.
"We're still young," Michaelson said. "But most of these guys were on varsity last year. I just have a great excitement for the season, I see growth, a lot of the guys, they want to be state champions."
The team is counting on the large roster to promote competitiveness. "We have this saying, champions build champions," Michaelson said. "If they're going to reach their goals, they are going to have to push each other."
Senior Luke Michaelson, junior Morgan Axelson and senior Matt Jensen are among the members of the Coyotes' football state semifinal team that will be leading the wrestling team.
"We've always been big believers that it's beneficial to be in a competitive environment all year long," Michaelson said.
The other three ranked wrestlers going into the season for Williston are freshman Eddie Maisey, sophomore Kirby Kain and junior Nick Schoedel, three out of a large group of underclassmen the team is counting on for now and for the future.
"I'm just really looking forward to seeing the growth we'll have during this season and beyond," Michaelson said.
