Milo Harry Payette was born on June 7, 1941, in Fairview, the son of Harry and Dorcas (Knarreborg) Payette. He was raised on the Knarreborg homesteaded family farm. He attended Dore and Fairview schools and graduated in 1959.

He went into the National Guard in Kentucky in 1959 and his term of enlistment was three years. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard in 1966. He married Charlotte Dooley on Nov. 18, 1961, in Fairview, at Zion Lutheran Church. They had four children.

Milo farmed in partnership with his father from 1962 until 1975. He raised sheep and cattle. Later, Milo and his son, Kent, incorporated Payette Farms in 1993. They were in the top 10 beet growers in 1998, top five beet growers in 2000 and 2002. They farmed together until 2005, at which time he went to work for the Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project. As a ditch rider, he enjoyed working with the farmers and his colleagues at the LYIP very much. Milo also sold insurance for Nodak Mutual for 36 years.

Milo spent many years involved with local organizations as a member and a leader. He has been very active in St. John’s Lutheran Church and was part of their church choir.

Milo loved to hunt, fish, boat, camp, golf and play cribbage. He spent many mornings at Mon-Kota with friends and neighbors visiting and playing cribbage at T & C Diner.

He also loved his children and grandchildren, as they loved him. He looked forward to all the visits and the time he could spend with them. He had an infectious smile and a wonderful sense of humor. Milo had a great zest for life.

Milo Harry Payette, 67, went to his heavenly home on Nov. 14, 2008. He passed away at the Billings Clinic Hospital after a valiant battle with lymphoma surrounded by his loving family.

Milo is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Charlotte, Fairview; his two daughters, Natalie (Tim) Carson, Billings, and Valerie (Tony) Nolan, Belgrade, Mont.; two sons, Kent (Cindy) Payette, Fairview, and Monte (Darla) Payette, Livingston, Mont.; brother, Vernon (Sue) Payette, Stagecoach, Nev.; sister, Anna Marie Kukus, Sidney; his grandchildren, Angela, Ryan, Claire, Danielle, Nicholas, Brennon, Amanda, Jantz, Chelsey and Carley; greatgrandchildren Bailey and Jaycey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
