The Williston High School boys and girls state cross country teams are headed to the state tournament this weekend in Jamestown.
The boys team enters the race with a No. 2 ranking in the most recent state poll.
The team is fighting with several familiar schools for placement in a sport dominated by the western half of the state.
“We’re hoping to get closer to Bismarck and stay ahead of Jamestown,” coach Clint Chamberlin said. Vying for individual honors for the Coyotes boys are Mark Anderson, who was ranked 8th in the state in recent polling, and Taylor Thompson, who was ranked 10th. Caleb Shaffer also came on strong toward the end of the season for varsity.
Also running for the boys are Max Longtin, Jacob Monson, Brandon Shaffer, Nathan Donnelly, Aaron Monson, Chris Chamberlin and Brendan Goldade.
The girls team enters the tournament coming off a sixth-place performance at the WDA meet, which is strong for a team that has struggled with injuries.
Whitney Harrison was All-WDA at that meet with a 14th-place finish.
Mari Goldade, Angie Goebel, Angel Klontz, Mariah Juhl, Hailey Horob and Brooke McNary will also run for the girls team.
The girls Class A race is run at 1 p.m. and the boys’ is at 2 p.m at Hillcrest Golf Course. Driving directions can be found at http://ndhsaa.org.
