The Williston High School boys cross country team took second at the WDA meet in Mandan on Tuesday, and the girls team placed sixth.
Williston’s fourth and fifth runners, Nathan Donnelly and Aaron Monson, nipped two runners from Bismarck Century to secure a two-point edge for the Coyotes for second place. Donnelly finished in 18:07 and Monson in 18:10.
Mark Anderson finished seventh in 16:49 for WHS, Taylor Thompson finished 10th in 16:53, and Caleb Shaffer finished 19th in 17:38.
Bismarck High ran away with the team title, with the top three runners and all five in the top 11. “Everybody ran pretty well,” said coach Clint Chamberlin. “It was a nice day down here, a little breezy, and the guys got out and ran tough.”
The junior varsity finished fourth with three runners: Brandon Shaffer (16th, 20:09), Max Longtin (21st, 20:49), Jacob Monson (23rd, 21:26). The junior-high team finished second by a point ahead of Jim Hill Middle School.
Whitney Harrison earned her third all-WDA honors for the girls team, placing 14th in 16:00.
Following her for WHS were Moriah Juhl (27th, 16:41), Mari Goldade (37th, 17:11), Angie Goebel (53rd, 18:10), Angel Klontz (55th, 18:19) and Brooke McNary (57th, 18:25).
“We had a solid race with Whitney and Moriah getting out hard the first mile with the lead pack of runners,” coach Allan Knutson said. “All of the girls competed very hard in good weather.”
Bismarck High took the team title in the girls division, followed by Bismarck Century and Minot.
