Williston tennis heads to state

Heath Glenn sets them up, and Jordan Nelson puts them away.

That’s how coach Wade Steuve described the teamwork of the Williston High School boys tennis doubles team that enters the state tournament, beginning today and running through Saturday in Bismarck, as the No. 1 seed out of the West.

They will be joined by doubles team Rory Guenther and Brook McFarlin, and the Coyotes will compete as a whole in the team competition.

Steuve said he hopes that Heath and Nelson can finish high enough to earn all-state honors.

“I’d like to see us get into the top four, if we can,” Glenn said. He attributed the doubles success he’s had this year with Nelson to a season of practicing together, learning each other’s styles.

“Heath doesn’t let anyone beat him,” Nelson said. “He always manages to return.”

Williston will open the team competition with Fargo Shanley.

“They have a real strong top 3,” Steueve said. “I think we match up with them really closely. It’s going to be close, 3-2, 2-3 either way.”

The winner of that match advances to play the winner of Dickinson and Red River.

Guenther and McFarlin will be te No. 8 seed out of the West and have to play top-ranked Tyler Davis and Jake LaDoucer of Red River immediately. They hope to make some progress either with an upset or in the consolation bracket.

“It’s going to be tough for me and Rory,” McFarlin said. “But I think we’ll do alright.”
