WHS girls golf team heads to regional tourney

The Williston High School girls golf team heads to the Souris Valley golf course in Minot today for the WDA regional tournament.

Williston is competing among eight teams for five or six spots in the state tournament, depending on how many of the teams bring a full contingent of golfers.

"It's a nice public course," said WHS coach Dennis Healy. "Eighteen holes with some water and fiercely quick greens."

The team was in Minot on Sunday to practice on those quick greens and get an early edge.

As they have all season, the Coyotes depend heavily on Ashley Beard

Beard's average of 76.8 in individual stroke play is second in the state and has already qualified her for the state tournament as an individual player.

"We're counting on Ashley to keep us in the ballgame," Healey said.

Likely next on the Coyotes' scoring list is Miranda Zavalney, 14th in the state in average at 92.4.

"She's been hitting the ball pretty consistently for us," Healey said.

Rounding out the team is Cari Zavalney, Kayla Barke and Anna Peterson, all of whom need to put up good days, says coach Healey.

The favorite to win the regional is Minot, with Bismarck Century and Dickinson also competitive.
