Beatrice Viall was born Feb. 8, 1926, the eleventh of 12 children born to Alfred and Anna (Quanrud) Lieberg in Wheelock Township just west of Ray. She attended rural schools during her elementary years and graduated from Ray High School in 1943.
She spent a year in Tacoma, Wash., before returning to Ray, where she has continued to live. Beatrice married Walter Viall on Aug. 2, 1946, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Ray. They made their home in Ray where they farmed and raised four children.
She was an active member of the community. She was a leader of the Ray Belles 4-H club, teaching young homemakers the art of sewing and cooking. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary that supported our veterans, and a member and bandleader of the Altar Society of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She spent many hours cooking, canning, sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, caring for elderly grandmothers, and traveling. Beatrice spent several winters in Arizona before becoming ill and returning to Ray this summer.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother who gave her love unconditionally, and who will forever be in our memories. Beatrice is survived by her daughters, JoAnne (Gary) Sorlien of Marana, Ariz., Gayle (Harvey) Keeney of Mandan, and Lorraine (Stan) Brautman of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Viall of Ray; six grandchildren, Scott (Leslie) Sorlien, Gregg Sorlien, Bret Keeney, Kezia (Marty) Zander, Eric and Brian Viall; four great-grandchildren, Preston and Parker Zander, Brandy Unterseher and Olivia Garrison.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; son, Wayne; six brothers, Arthur, Gilman, Roy, Walter, Manfred and Dale Lieberg; and five sisters, Cora Som, Thelma Kvalhiem, Orla Evanson, Vivian Meath and Helen Kirby.
A rosary will be held for Beatrice on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at St. Michaels Catholic Church.
Friends may call at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Tioga on Friday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church one hour prior to the Rosary on Friday, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
