David Ponitz, SBHE consultant, prepared the profile and timeline. Ponitz and North Dakota University System Chancellor William Goetz participated in Thursday's committee meeting via telephone.
The next step in the process is to create a written advertisement for the Chronicle of Higher Education, a weekly publication for college and university faculty members and administration. The advertisement needs to be submitted on Sept. 22 to run on Oct. 3,10,17.
At this point, the Chronicle of Higher Education is the only publication being utilized for advertising the vacancy that's created by the retirement of President Joseph McCann this coming April. The committee is currently exploring additional local and state advertising.
Placing a two-column advertisement in three consecutive issues of the Chronicle of Higher Education costs about $11,000, said Ponitz. He added the publication has a readership of 400,000 people. An advertisement subcommittee was created at Thursday's meeting to help with the written description of the job. Diane Hagen, Williston Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, and Wanda Meyer, WSC Distance Education director and associate professor, are the subcommittee members.
Ponitz suggests the wording be "short" and to the point.
"It needs to be something pretty catchy," said Dick McKennett, search committee chair.
Two other subcommittees were created to develop a brochure and Web site. Brochures are to be printed and distributed between Sept. 25-30. Ponitz plans to distribute the brochure among placement officers around the country, individuals meeting the profile and applicants.
The brochure is to inform candidates about the school, the community and the region, said McKennett.
The committee expects the brochure to look professional while highlighting Williston's attributes.
Applications for the position need to be submitted by Nov. 17. Ponitz will begin the review process on Oct. 10 until the position is filled.
Ponitz also is conducting a background, credential and reference check, said McKennett. By Nov. 28, Pontiz i to have the search narrowed to approximately 15 individuals, said McKennett.
"I want us to complete this process as soon as we can," said McKennett.
From Nov. 28 to Dec. 15, Ponitz and committee members are to work together to reduce the number of applicants down to about 10. These candidates are to be interviewed via the interactive video network from Jan. 10-15. The committee then is to select about six final candidates for interviews at WSC.
On Jan. 20, the committee plans to submit its recommendations to the SBHE, which then is to interview the candidates on Feb. 9.
"We'll get it down to approximately three," said McKennett.
The committee hopes to be finished before McCann retires on April 15, 2009.
"It's a pretty tight time line...but I think we can meet it," said McKennett.
The budget to fund the search process is to be finalized in next few days, said North Dakota University System Chancellor William Goetz, adding WSC is incurring all costs.
The next search committee meeting is at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19.
