Around 5 p.m. (MT), the Richland County Sheriff’s Office was notified that a person may have drowned at the Seven Sisters Recreation area south of Sidney.
The sheriff’s office, along with the Savage Fire Department and the Sidney Fire Department responded to the site.
Witnesses reported to law enforcement officials that Basta had been fishing with his two sons. The boys were in the water when they got too far out and were struggling to return to shore.
Basta went to help the youngest son. When the boys returned to shore, Basta was unable to make it back. Members of the Sidney and Savage fire departments launched boats and attempted to locate Basta in the area he was last seen. When darkness fell Sunday evening, the search was called off, but resumed Monday morning with boats and personal water craft from the Sidney and Savage fire departments.
Richland County Sheriff Brad Baisch said the search for Basta is ongoing.
